The Simply Striped Crochet Scrunchie is the first in Ada Mae Crochet’s Simply-Striped Collection of patterns. Stay in the loop on every pattern I drop by following me on Instagram. This collection all carries a satisfying theme of repeating half double crochet and slip stitch rows. Patterns that repeat like this are exactly the kind that get me in a flow that can really settle my mind. I’m excited to share!

Choosing this as my first crochet pattern to release is not just random.. Scrunchies were the very first items I sold in the Ada Mae Etsy shop when I was just selling ready-made items (credit to Lenka of Happy Heartsy for her lovely design), so my start to designing patterns naturally needed to be here. Thanks for getting all sentimental with me 🤍
The Simply Striped Crochet scrunchie pattern was designed with ease in mind for those looking for a project with a lot of repetition to sink into. But this ease doesn’t come at the expense of style and quality!
This scrunchie is equal parts functional and fashionable—the perfect finishing touch for your up-do! And can we talk about that perfect scrunch?.. 😍
This scrunchie pattern works up fairly fast, making it great for a last minute gift, or to stock up your market booth or Etsy shop!

Materials needed:
- US sz H (5mm) crochet hook
- About 80 yds (44g) of any worsted weight yarn. (I used Caron All-Day Cotton yarn in Cream for the Tutorial photos and Moss and Eyes Blue in the finished scrunchie photos. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn is also a great replacement)
- One 4mm elastic hair tie (I used Goody Ouchless Hair Elastics)
Abbreviations:
- Ch-chain
- Hdc-half double crochet
- Rep-repeat
- Sl st-slip stitch
- St(s)-stitch(es)
Skill Rating:
Advanced beginner (requires knowledge of crocheting in the round and using the flat slip stitch join technique)
Gauge:
4×4”= 14 hdc sts x 11 rows (though gauge is not overly important for this pattern)
Finished size:
Approximately 2” from elastic band to outer rim, 5.5” in total diameter
Tips:
- Pattern is worked in the round, so do not turn work after each row
- ch-1 at beginning of round does NOT count as a st throughout the pattern
Pattern:
Ch 20

Looping the chain around the hair band, join back to the first chain, being careful not to twist. Round 1 will be crocheted into the back bumps of the chain. To keep all the back bumps facing the same direction when you join, you’ll want to remove the hook and re-insert it from the other side.

hook out and re-insert it. All the back bumps
of the chain are now facing out.

Round 1: ch 1, hdc in the back bump of each chain, sl st to join with first hdc. (20 hdc)

Round 2: Sl st in each hdc to the end of the round, sl st for a second time into the first hdc of the previous round

Round 3: ch 1, hdc in each of the sts you slip stitched into in the previous round, sl st to join with the first hdc of the round

Rounds 4-65: Rep rounds 2 & 3 until you have a total of 33 hdc rounds, ending on a hdc round

Use the flat slip stitch joining technique to connect row 65 with the starting chain all the way around.

Fasten off and tuck ends inside the scrunchie to hide.
